glam rock is a style of rock music that developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s and was performed by musicians who wore outrageous costumes, makeup, and hairstyles, particularly platform shoes and glitter. glam artists rejected the revolutionary rhetoric of the late 1960s rock scene and instead glorified decadence, superficiality, and the simple structures of earlier pop music. in response, scholars have characterized glam rock as "offensive, commercial, and cultural emasculation,"... and who doesn't love that!

quiet storm is a radio format and genre of R&B, performed in a smooth, romantic, jazz-influenced style that began in the 70s. encompassing a mix of African American music genres, quiet storm music is distinguished by understated, mellow dynamics and relaxed tempos and rhythms. it can be soothingly pensive, or express romantic sentiment. quiet storm music is similar to soft rock and adult contemporary styles, but it is more closely and unmistakably rooted in R&B and soul music, often with jazz extensions!

doo wop is a style of rhythm-and-blues and rock-and-roll vocal music popular in the 50s and 60s popularized by Black American musicians in the mid-twentieth century. vocal groups would sing a cappella harmonies and use sounds to make rhythm, so its name stems from the kinds of musical background noises that backup singers would make when they performed! it’s known for its simple syllables, beats, and lyrics. the subjects typically sang about were all things to do with dating, love, longing, marriage, and heartbreak. i'm not going to lie... this genre is a guilty pleasure of mine!

new romantic was a UK underground cultural movement in the early 1980s in response to how punk rock evolved. new romantics rejected punk's austere and anti-fashion stance and adopted its notable distinctive androgynous clothing and theatrical hair and makeup. as a sub-genre of new wave, the sound of new romantic is flamboyant, glamorous, and highly danceable!

originating in the late ’60s and early ’70s, bubblegum was a subgenre of pop music and rock ‘n’ roll known for its sing-along choruses, upbeat melodies, and simple yet catchy lyrics. while many critics considered bubblegum to be “disposable” due to it being marketed toward a young audience, bubblegum influenced genres ranging from glam rock and punk rock to ’90s era boy bands. bubblegum is fun, positive, and innocent - what’s not to love!
