    Erythronium Quinaultense 'QUINAULT FAWN-LILY'

for plastic flowers' final set (for now,,,,) we've got the <quinault fawn-lily> ! a rare flower that is known only from a few populations on the southwestern edge of the olympics, it only grows at elevations of 1,000 to 3,000 feet. it is known by its six petals that are white at the base and darken into a really lovely shade of pink. look it up you won't be disappointed :-)

    bark up the RIGHT tree

according to my extensive research (one google search), seattle is ranked the 7th densest city in the world for trees, with there being about seven trees for every one person :o if you're as excited about this as i am, i recommend checking out the virtual "brockman memorial tree tour" which will take you to 81 of the most noteworthy trees on campus. tonight's episode features some songs i recommend listening to while on this tour or if you happen to be sitting underneath a redwood!

    Calypso Bulbosa!

the calypso orchid <aka fairy slipper> is a native plant that is notoriously difficult to come across in the wild. they typically flower in the early summer and can be found in the olympics and cascades. somewhere out there exists an extremely dedicated community of people who hunt for and blog about these orchids, so here is a collection of songs i would recommend listening to if you find yourself in the washington wilderness on the hunt for some rare flowers :-)

    Lupinus Latifolius ‘BROADLEAF LUPINE’

tonight’s set is dedicated to the broadleaf lupine :-) a relatively common wildflower on the west coast, it’s characterized by bushels of purple blossoms & palmately compound leaves. as it so happens, there is a bench by the sakuma viewpoint that is completely surrounded by broadleaf lupines. even on a rainy day like this, it is very peaceful being surrounded by this plant, thus tonight’s set is a collection of songs I would recommend listening to if you ever find yourself in its presence.

    Dicentra Formosa ‘PACIFIC BLEEDING HEART’

tonight’s show is dedicated to the pacific bleeding heart, a native wildflower that is primarily found west of the cascades and all the way down to central california. as you can probably guess from its name, these flowers have little heart-shaped blossoms (and foliage that resembles a fern). in honor of the pacific bleeding heart, tonight’s set is all above love <3

    'Silk Tassel Tree'

a mere 20ft southwest of the HUB exists a plot of silk tassel trees! an evergreen bush characterized by its long male catkins and glossy/dark green leaves, this plant is truly a sight to behold during the winter months. given its name and dream-like presence, tonight’s song selections are silky, hazy, and (just a little bit) dreamy:)

    Cardamine Hirsuta ‘SHOTWEED’!

located around the UW farm and union bay natural area, you may stumble across bunches of shotweed <aka bittercress or pop-in-the-eye weed>. when its seed pods are just about ripe, the slightest touch will cause the tiny seeds to explode and hit you in the eye if you're not paying attention. in case you ever find yourself foraging around campus, this plant is chewy, palatable, and (somewhat) tasty just like tonight’s selection of songs:)

    ’Evening Primrose’

tonight’s plant of choice is the <evening primrose>, which can be found on either side of the cascades crest here in WA and throughout north america. even though this plant only blooms for a short few months during the summer, it’s often nice to reminisce about days that were longer, brighter, and (let's be honest) better. the flowers only open at sunset and are closed during the daytime, so this plant is definitely best enjoyed at night. and just like that! this week’s set includes some songs i personally think are best enjoyed at night:)

    'The Peanut Butter Tree'

tonight’s show is dedicated to the harlequin glorybower! found near the staff parking section of the graham visitors center at the uw botanic gardens, it's a small tree/large-ish shrub that is often referred to as “the peanut butter tree” due to the peanut butter scent given off by its leaves when crushed. delicate white flowers appear in the late summer, with bright pinkish-red calyxes opening up to metallic blue fruit in the fall. this week's set will feature a variety of genres, just like this plant's diverse appearances :D

    Fern Friday :D

tonight’s set is dedicated to the one and only deer fern! native to the northwest and Alaska, they can be found in moist forests, stream banks, and lining the streets and pathways on campus. as its name suggests, the deer fern is considered to have medicinal properties after deer have been seen rubbing their heads against it after losing their antlers. although it’s not a particularly flashy plant, it’s short and sweet with fronds typically only growing up to 2ft in length. like this plant, tonight’s set features some short and sweet songs :)
